From lighting manufacturers who claim their lamps keep building occupants healthy to a desk chair that is bent on better posture and to two interior claddings that put a fresh spin on wood, the products we’re featuring this week aim to give the spaces in which they’re used, and those who use them, a boost.
Color Cladding, Windfall Lumber
Windfall Lumber is partnering with paint manufacturer Yolo Colorhouse to use its zero-VOC paints on a line of reclaimed interior cladding. The result: subtle but saturated combinations of the paints’ vibrant hues and the woods’ natural tones that can be mixed and matched. Color Cladding comprises FSC-certified Douglas fir and hemlock as well as glue-laminated timbers that are reclaimed from industrial, agricultural, and residential applications in the Pacific Northwest. Twelve colors are available.
Definity Digital, Lighting Science Group
LED technology is enabling lighting manufacturers to create more versatile products. Lighting Science Group developed its series of Definity Digital LED lamps with color temperatures and lumen outputs that are optimized for tasks such as improving melatonin production, boosting alertness, accelerating plant growth, and protecting wildlife. The technology for the Awake & Alert lamp (shown), for instance, came out of the company’s partnership with NASA to develop lighting that would help astronauts manage their circadian rhythms while in space. The series fits E26 bases and includes BR30 and A19 lamp types.
Mirra 2, Herman Miller
A decade after Herman Miller launched the ergonomic desk chair Mirra its design team updated the piece with more recycled content, improved support, and a leaner form. For the chair’s shell, a winged arm functions as a spine connecting to a fabric layer whose polymer veins offer support. Mirra 2 comprises 21% post-consumer and 25% pre-consumer recycled content; all aluminum components are made entirely of recycled content. The chair is Cradle to Cradle Silver and GreenGuard Gold certified.
Linear Line Collection, Smith & Fong
Inspired by the look of hand-woven textiles, Smith & Fong’s new line of carved architectural panels features six vertically fluted facings that each tops a graphic core. The Linear Line Collection is made from FSC-certified bamboo and is free of urea formaldehyde. The panels measure ¾” thick, 4’ wide, and 8’ tall, and weigh 90 pounds each. Available with natural- and amber-colored finishes.
Solarban z75, PPG
Offering building occupants clear views to the outside without inhibiting thermal performance is an ongoing challenge for architects and designers. For use in warmer climate zones, PPG’s Solarban z75 glass offers a visible light transmittance of 48% and a solar-heat-gain coefficient of 0.24. The gray-tinted, low-e lites can be used in standard 1” insulating glass units. The glass is Cradle to Cradle Silver certified.
