Illuminator, launched in the fall of 2012, is a conceptual publication where “light is turned into an emotional experience.” Conceived of by Munich-based lighting designer Gerd Pfarré and graphic designer Frank Koschembar, the publication is distinguished by its extra-large format: 19 inches wide by 27 inches tall. The inaugural issue looked at the topic of bioluminescence. Now the duo has published issue No. 2, which is organized around the theme of “Artistic Light.” Content includes the work of artist Olafur Eliasson, who hand selected his projects that appear in the issue; the work of American artist Janet Echelman and her sculptural net structures; and a critique of the incandescent light bulb’s phase out by Ulf Erdmann Ziegler, who achieved notoriety in 2009 when he stockpiled more than 3000 incandescents in his Frankfurt, Germany apartment. Pfarré and Koschembar are already at work on issue No. 3, which will launch in March 2014 to coincide with Light+Building in Frankfurt, Germany.
