Impulse is an installation of 30 giant illuminated seesaws and nine accompanying light projections constructed on the Place des Festivals in Montréal as part of the city’s annual winter celebration called Luminothérapie. The installation, a competition-winning design by Toronto-based Lateral Office and Montreal-based CS Design, in collaboration with EPG Group in Montréal, is on view through January 31; weeknights to 10:00 p.m., weekends to 11:00 p.m. Visitors activate the seesaws through motion. Once moving, they emit light and sound, and the patterns are displayed via light projections on neighboring building façades.
The Bureau du Design (Office of Design) of the Ville de Montréal works with the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership to plan and produce the annual winter Luminothérapie festival.
The Call for Proposal for the Luminothérapie 2016 Competition is currently open. The registration deadline is Feb. 5, 2016, and proposals are due Feb. 16, 2016. The competition is open to teams whose lead designers are based in Canada. New for the 2016 - 2017 program, competition entries must address the theme: tale, as in a story.
