The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has issued its latest white paper addressing the electronic aspects of current outdoor luminaires. The document, NEMA LSD 80-2018 Installation Guidelines for Outdoor Luminaires—Grounding Considerations, specifically discusses grounding issues and recommended installation procedures as they relate to the National Electrical Safety Code. Today’s luminaires, including fixtures for outdoor applications, incorporate more electronic components (i.e. LEDs, electronic drivers, and electronic lighting controls) than previous generations of luminaires, and “…are more sensitive to grounding and wiring issues than earlier technologies.” NEMA LSD 80-2018, provides a guide for addressing these issues, and can be downloaded from the NEMA website.
