Painted Plains, Avo
Designer Brit Kleinman’s Painted Plains collection of leather rugs is informed by her Brooklyn studio’s anthropological aesthetic. Crafted from vegetable-tanned cowhides, each rug has a unique shape and features bold, custom graphics hand-painted by Kleinman using a water-based stain. A clear topcoat adds durability.
Rabari, Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien for Nanimarquina
London studio Doshi Levien designed a four-carpet collection for Nanimarquina that is hand-knotted and woven on a vertical loom by artisans in India using traditional techniques. Rabari features a patchwork of colorful designs, lines, and shapes with neutral black, beige, and green backgrounds. The series is made entirely of sheep wool sourced from New Zealand. It is offered in three sizes: 5.6’ by 7.9’, 6.6’ by 9.8’, and 9.8’ by 13.1’.
Stagione, Ruckstuhl
Swiss studio Atelier Oï designed the four-piece Stagione series for Swiss carpet maker Ruckstuhl in warm and cool colorways with each rug emulating a different season. Woven in wool, the rugs’ solid color blocks overlap to create variable hues. The asymmetrically-shaped rugs have maximum dimensions of 5.9’ square, 8’ square, and 9.8’ square.
Double Layer Rugs, Marcantonio Raimondi Malerba for Nodus
Bright-colored dots, triangles, and lines overlay the backdrop of an otherwise muted Persian rug, adding a third dimension to Italian designer Marcantonio Raimondi Malerba’s five-piece series of rugs (Red, shown) for Nodus. Double Layer is made of hand-knotted wool and is offered in custom dimensions and colors.
Ossington, Steve Yeates for Modallion
Toronto-based designer Steve Yeates interpreted the ethos of his current hometown’s Ossington Village neighborhood—which is characterized as a contemporary arts community within a Victorian architectural setting—in wool and silk. The eponymous rug for Reznick Carpet’s Modallion brand is hand woven in Nepal and can be specified in custom sizes and colors.
Another Rug, &Tradition
Copenhagen-based studio ATWTP used New Zealand sheep wool and cotton to create the abstract graphic motif of a stairway in this kilim for Danish brand &Tradition. Another Rug comes in bold palettes of yellows, reds, greens, and blues. Offered in three sizes: 34.4” by 55.1”, 34.4” by 94.5”, and 66.9” by 94.5”.
Lake Collection, Raw Edges for Golran
London-based studio Raw Edges updates the classic Persian rug with vertical stripes and overlapping triangles inspired by the abstract, kinetic work of artist Yaacov Agam. The Lake Collection is constructed from kilim weaving techniques with varied pile heights, resulting in color saturation and a graphical arrangement that changes based on the angle from which the rug is viewed. The series debuted at Salone in April.
Herringbone, Jonathan Saunders for The Rug Company
Scottish fashion designer Jonathan Saunders mapped his trademark graphic prints and vibrant hues onto rugs and runners in a collection for The Rug Company, which is headquartered in London. Among the collection is Herringbone (shown), which features hand-knotted Tibetan wool in a clashing palette of rusted red, hot pink, black, and pale green colors that create a congruous pattern. The rug measures 8.9’ long and 6’ wide.
