Philips Lighting and international flooring manufacturer Tarkett announced their third collaboration with the debut of Luminous vinyl flooring at retail lighting trade fair Euroshop 2017, which took place March 5 to 9, in Düsseldorf, Germany. Geared towards commercial, retail, and hospitality spaces, the new product uses connected LED technology to convey messages to visitors who may need help or directional guidance within a space.

The vinyl flooring incorporates a light translucent formula that allows slim-profile LEDs to emit a glow through the material. Each lighting display can be controlled and programmed through a smartphone application. This way, retailers are able to display text such as advertisements, informational signage, and even social media updates in real-time. The vinyl is available in a variety of finishes including natural stone, wood, and graphic prints.

Philips and Tarkett brands have partnered in the past. In 2013, carpeting company Desso introduced Luminous Carpets into the European market, and North America followed soon after in 2015 with flooring company Tandus Centiva. Similar to the new vinyl tiles, super thin LED panels are hidden under light-transmitting carpeting in order to illuminate helpful text on the floor.
