Recycled content is becoming ubiquitous among the ingredients of eco-conscious building and design products. This week, we’ve gathered a selection of products that pair their sustainable makeup with innovative design. From an expandable modular wall-and-seat combo to lightweight structural panels, these products will shape up your space and your green cred.
Benchwall, Molo Designs
Molo Designs combined its modular Softwall and Softseating into a single system that lets users customize otherwise-open floor plans with spaces for private discussions or solo work. Benchwall’s flexible honeycomb structure can expand, contract, and bend. It is made of flame-retardant recyclable paper that contains 50% recycled content. The material's surface is designed to compress from repeated use and its components connect via magnetic side panels.
Kerflights, Graypants
These kerf-cut shades are made from the Seattle studio’s recycled corrugated cardboard and are supported by powdercoated steel frames as pendants, table lamps, and sconces. Kerflight’s reversible shade panels come in five shapes and a variety of colors including white, black, and red-orange.
Lollygagger, Loll Designs
Loll Designs crafts its Lollygagger collection of outdoor furniture from composite boards whose contents include post-consumer recycled plastic milk jugs, a UV-stabilizer, and a colored pigment. The Duluth, Minn.–based outdoor furniture maker was founded in 2003 by a skate park design/build contractor who wanted to repurpose leftover materials. The new collection includes a lounge, sofa, chaise (shown), and occasional tables.
Environmental Structural Panels, Noble Environmental Technologies
The Ecor Environmental Structural Panels from Noble Environmental Technologies are made from 100% post-consumer-recycled and bio-based cellulose fibers that are mixed with water, heated, and compressed into rigid, structural forms. The lightweight panels are configured for uses such as joists and walls and are formaldehyde-free. This product was a finalist in the 2013 Cradle-to-Cradle product innovation challenge.
Basketweave, Chilewich
Chilewich added four metallic colorways to its Basketweave line of floor and wallcoverings. The new additions use bi-color yarns to create contrast. Woven from the company’s phthalate-free TerraStrand yarns that contain 25% renewable vegetable content, the antimicrobial product is Green Label Plus–certified. Available in sienna, mineral blue, galvanized steel, and brushed copper.
