The New York and Milan offices of Studio Daniel Libeskind will design a pavilion at the Milan Universal Exposition in 2015; the pavilion will be underwritten by real estate developer China Vanke Co.. The 2015 Milan Expo—planned by architects Stefano Boeri, Ricky Burdett, Jacques Herzog, Hon. FAIA, William McDonough, FAIA, and Mark Rylander—will bear the theme “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life,” and will cover issues of sustainability. Milan is not Vanke’s first involvement in the World Expo; the company also sponsored a low-emission wheat straw board pavilion in the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. Nor will the Milan project be the first collaboration for China Vanke Co. and Daniel Libeskind, FAIA; they have already collaborated on the Zhang Zhidong and Modern Industrial Museum in Wuhan, China, which is currently under construction, and slated for completion at the end of 2014.
