The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has announced that Jennifer Dunlop Fletcher will serve as its department head and associate curator for architecture and design. Dunlop Fletcher succeeds Henry Urbach, who left the museum in 2011.
Dunlop Fletcher has already made her mark on the institution, which is currently closed as it undergoes a three-year project to build a 225,000-square-foot expansion by Snøhetta. With assistant curator of architecture and design Joseph Becker, she co-curated “Lebbeus Woods, Architect,” the last new exhibit at the museum before it closed. Last year, she curated a show of works by Buckminster Fuller and invited filmmaker Sam Green and indie-rock band Yo La Tengo to perform a special piece for the show.”It couldn’t be a more exciting time to be at SFMOMA,” Dunlop Fletcher said in a release. “The building’s imminent expansion, the interim period to explore off-site collaborations, and the now twenty-five-year-old Architecture and Design collection are all wonderful opportunities to re-examine the role of design in the Bay Area and beyond.”
It will be some time before viewers get the opportunity to see her work as SFMOMA’s architecture and design department head and lead curator. In the interim, Dunlop Fletcher is guest-curating a show for the Hammer Museum on the work of Los Angeles architect A. Quincy Jones and pursuing other outside collaborations. She will continue to work on the museum’s collections, building upon recent additions such as Ant Farm’s Convention City model (1972) and Ron Arad’s Concrete Stereo (1983).
Dunlop Fletcher has a bachelor’s degree in art history from New York University, a master’s in curatorial studies of contemporary art from Bard College, and a master’s in architecture history and theory from Harvard University.
