The Architectural League of New York and Socrates Sculpture Park are calling for submissions into their second annual Folly competition. In addition to having their design built and displayed for several months at the park, winners will participate in a three-month design/build residency. Young architects and designers are welcome to apply and entrants do not have to be registered architects, but full-time students are not eligible.
Entrants are asked to consider and play with the balance between architecture and sculpture while completing the submission process. Exploring the park or its website is also strongly recommended. Socrates Sculpture Park, located in Queens, N.Y., features an ever-changing display of contemporary sculptures in an unusual urban waterfront setting. The winning individual or team will receive $5,000 and access to fully-equipped studio space for the production of the design.
The 2013 jury members include architects Michael Arad, Granger Moorhead, AIA, and Billie Tsien, AIA, along with artist Orly Genger, and Socrates Sculpture Park executive director, John Hatfield. Submissions are accepted via email at [email protected] through Jan. 7.
Last year’s winner—“Curtain” by Jerome W. Haferd and K. Brandt Knapp—can be seen in the accompanying slideshow and will remain at the park through March.
