California Exhibit Honors 100 Years of Design by Women

The saying “what’s old is new again” is apropos in talking about the latest exhibition at the Los Angeles Museum of California Design. Elizabeth Eaton Burton’s shell lamp—inspired by the Santa Barbara, Calif., seaside setting, where she spent her teenage years—would look right at home in a trendy, vintage apartment today; as would Marilyn Kay Austin’s 1962 fluorescent-blue floor vase. The exhibition California’s Designing Women: 1896-1986 celebrates 46 of the women who helped shape California into a design epicenter, while also shifting the female-dominated craft into a more gender-neutral and desirable profession.
