Newly released by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a compilation of best practices regarding water use in businesses and organizations instructs building managers on how to reduce water use to save energy and lower operational costs. “WaterSense at Work: Best Management Practices for Commercial and Institutional Facilities” was created by the EPA’s WaterSense program as a guideline for cutting water use.
Schools, hotels, hospitals, and other facilities and office buildings account for up to 17 percent of publicly supplied water use in the U.S., according to the EPA. To help counterbalance this use, the agency recommends installing certain products and taking on new strategies, such as metering—or monitoring water use—to help boost building efficiency.
The guide covers topics such as water management planning, commercial kitchen equipment, outdoor water use, and on-site alternative water sources. It also presents case studies on various facilities that have reduced water use and increased savings. The guide can be found on the EPA
