Project Description
This new showroom , located in a historic loft in Chicago’s River North Furniture District, is an example of the synergy which can be created between architecture, product design and marketing, when each are given equal importance in the design process. A sleek palette of new materials, representing the modern design of which Roche-Bobois is known, contrasts intentionally with the heavy timber loft construction of the space. To increase visibility into the two-level showroom, the existing entrance was relocated and provided with an angled steel and concrete stair to draw pedestrians up, and a large opening in the floor to provide views into the lower level. A large centrally located floor opening with a floating stair provides access and natural light between the showroom floors. Designed specifically for the display of “Cloud” lights, a double wall of mullionless glass surrounds the stair with the lights hanging between them, turning what would normally be a simple railing into an experience of light, transparency, shadow and reflection. Floating ceilings at various levels relate to furniture settings in both size and color, creating a sense of space and providing for the display of the Roche-Bobois line of wall fabrics.
