Project Description

The goal for this renovation/addition was to transform the interior of an existing historic Dupont Circle rowhouse into a light, modern structure with an open atmosphere that opposes the massive heaviness of the original structure. The rear facade was completely removed and a steel structure inserted. As the steel could span the entire width of the rowhouse, this allowed the rear walls to be infilled with glass, rather than the original masonry, opening up the third floor master suite completely to the outside. This inside/outside connection is emphasized with a glass corner in the master bathroom tub area, as well as folding glass doors that span the full width of the master bedroom and open onto a new deck. The steel structure was exposed in most locations, and steel was carried through the third floor, culminating in the new deck structure. Stainless steel was used for more delicate components such as shelves and railings. Cherry was selected for all custom cabinetry, due to its richness of color and grain, and aluminum base and pulls balance the cherry in color and texture. Copper cladding on the rear facade was selected for its durability, as well as the jewel-like feeling it gives to the building.
