Project Description
The 601 Lexington Avenue tower, formerly known as Citicorp Center, is one of New York’s most recognized and iconic skyscrapers. With its distinctive sloped roofline and shimmering aluminum cladding, the entire building sits on four “super columns” which allow the building to open at the base. The complex includes a retail complex, a subway stop, and Saint Peter’s Lutheran Church, all arranged around a landscaped public plaza.
Originally designed by The Stubbins Associates (the predecessor firm to KlingStubbins) in 1972, the main lobby was recently expanded and renovated to meet enhanced security requirements and to develop a new primary point of access on Lexington Avenue. The new all-glass lobby was created on top of the existing bridge adjacent to Saint Peter’s Church. At two stories in height and more than 70 feet long, the lobby projects toward Lexington Avenue to create a grand, light-filled space that glows from the inside out. The steel structure has clear spans along its entire length, with glazing delicately hung from the structure to enhance the light and airy feel of the space.
