Project Description
A modern atelier was the concept behind the design for 210 North Carpenter, located in the Fulton Market district of Chicago. The handset brick and glass base of the building, held to the familiar 10 stories of many of the neighboring timber loft buildings, is topped with a three-story modern metal and glass pavilion. The offset core allows for an uninterrupted 75-foot lease span with 12-foot exposed concrete ceilings. A full-floor amenity level, surrounded by a large outdoor terrace, boasts a large fitness center complete with an indoor lap pool, social lounges, and a conference center.
Located on a site that was previously home to Foote Brothers, an aircraft motor company in the 1920s, the interior design for the building was inspired by the notions of movement and flight, with a nod to the classical traditions of aviation design. Materials such as cold-rolled steel and exposed concrete floors combine with rivet details, aerodynamic-formed ceiling lights, turnbuckles, and large-scale abstracted images of airplane parts throughout the lobby and public spaces.
An amenity floor is located on the 10th floor of the building and features a large tenant bar and lounge area. The centerpiece of the design is a custom, curated artifact wall displaying various objects found and collected from sites developed by the client across the city. Steel posts salvaged from the project site serve as a sculptural screening element between the lounge and conference center. A Nanawall opens up to connect the indoors to a large outdoor terrace. A fitness center, yoga studio, locker rooms, and a two-lane indoor lap pool round out the building’s amenity program.
