The one bedroom, one bathroom 550 square foot FabCab cabin was built on Lake Pend Orielle near Sandpoint, Idaho in 2012.
The FabCab system, designed by Architect Emory Baldwin, combines the beauty of 100% FOHC Douglas Fir and the energy efficiency of SIPs panels. The timbers are milled offsite with precise computer controlled machines, as are the SIPs panels, and the offsite construction of these materials allow for very little onsite material waste and easy assembly.
The homeowners wanted a small home on the lake that would allow them to be comfortable when visiting, while much of their time could be spent outdoors or on the water. Although only one bedroom, the open floor design of the home makes efficient use of all 550 square feet and is spacious enough to easily entertain. Climate control of cabin was also made very efficient and is heated and cooled with a ductless mini split heat pump. The homeowners don’t have to miss the amenities of home as the small cabin includes a full bathroom with steam shower and heated flooring and a fully functioning kitchen.
The build location is on a very steep lake side slope that required complex engineering and difficult excavation and concrete preparation. The deck was designed to enjoy the view and dropped down beneath the plane of the home to allow for unobstructed views from the interior. The slope of the hillside also allowed for the inclusion of a small storage area beneath the home for outdoor sports equipment.
