Project Description
FROM THE ARCHITECTS:
Creating a light-filled space to the roof of a terraced house to provide the family with a new master
bedroom and en-suite whilst enjoying sweeping views across the rooftops.
The design brief sought to create a house that could accommodate the clients’ young sons whilst
creating a relaxing space away from the family hubbub. Planning permission required the client to go to
appeal and to make the mansard all but invisible from the street. The architectural strategy sought to
reduce visibility from the street, by chamfering the roof and setting back the new façade from the
parapet. This approach created an opportunity for an east facing strip window, running the full width of
the space. Careful detailing of the sun screening, window seat and concealed heating element,
contribute to the design ambition to transform the way the family views the city.
The design has created a little light-filled sanctuary which feels distinct from the rest of the house: a
swathe of luxury above the Victorian building below. The full-width glazing at the front, gives us an
engaging vista over the roofs of urban Kentish Town, a great way to wake up. The rear high-level strip
window gives privacy in the bathroom. Outside, the new construction is far more discreet than the
usual mansard extension
