Project Description

BioNest is a temporary installation by multidisciplinary collective Wevolve Labs that debuted at Creek Show 2021 in Austin Texas, sponsored by Waterloo Greenway Conservancy and Lea Ann & Steve Fowler. Taking a craft and material-based approach informed by a practice of research and making, Bio-Nest takes inspiration from the biology of plants and animals found at Waller Creek in both form and material. Each free-standing “lantern” features a translucent bio-plastic skin made primarily from seaweed and harvested plants from different places across West Texas. Each one is site-specific and identifiable by the ecology within the material. Synchronized light and sound join the figures in conversation with each other to a custom soundscape with nature recordings. The entire work is bio-degradable and can return to the earth at the end of its life partaking in the new circular economy by designing with nature, tradition, and abundant materials.
