Green building pioneer Alex Wilson, founder of BuildingGreen in Brattleboro, Vt., was named this year’s recipient of The Hanley Award for Vision and Leadership in Sustainable Housing. Wilson was selected from among 12 distinguished nominees by a panel of judges that included Michael J. Hanley, president of The Hanley Foundation; Frank Anton, CEO of Hanley Wood; Joyce Mason, vice president of marketing for Pardee Homes; Nate Kredich, vice president of residential market development for the U.S. Green Building Council; and last year’s Hanley Award recipient, Edward Mazria of Architecture 2030.
Wilson will receive the award and its $50,000 grant at the USGBC Hanley Award Dinner ceremony Nov. 17 during the USGBC’s Greenbuild International Conference and Expo in Chicago.
Alex Wilson is probably best known for launching the monthly newsletter Environmental Building News (EBN) in 1992, which became one of the earliest credible sources of information available about green building products and technology. BuildingGreen is also the publisher of the GreenSpec Directory and online technical resources at buildinggreen.com. His influence can be felt across the industry, from product manufacturing to building technology to green building rating systems and educational programs. Over the years he also has served on the boards of the U.S. Green Building Council, the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association, and the Conservation and Research Foundation, and has won national awards for journalism, environmental leadership, and educational outreach.
“Alex Wilson’s selection for this year’s Hanley Award is a tremendous acknowledgement for his decades of visionary leadership in environmental building,” said Michael J. Hanley, creator of the award. “For more than 30 years Alex has quietly and methodically gone about the business of changing the way we build, and in the process has become one of the most influential and trusted voices in the industry.”
Wilson was selected from this year’s slate of nominees that also included architect David Baker, FAIA; Dennis Creech of Southface Energy Institute; USGBC founder David Gottfried; Robert Hammon of Consol; building scientist Mark LaLiberte; New Orleans’ Make It Right Foundation; architect and Cradle-To-Cradle creator William McDonough, FAIA; builder Chris Miles; architect Peter Pfeiffer, FAIA; industry pioneer Steven Winter, FAIA; and public housing executive Sunia Zaterman.
