The National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) recently announced the results of two annual design competitions: the 2011 NKBA Design Competition, which honors the most innovative kitchen and bath designs of the year from among its membership, and the 2011 NKBA/GE Charette [sic] Competition for kitchen and bath design students.

Three project designers in nine categories have been chosen as finalists in the 2011 Design Competition, and the winners will be selected from among the finalists and announced during the 2011 Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) on April 26 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The category finalists are:

Students entering the 2011 charrette competition were tasked with applying their knowledge of kitchen design to produce a floor plan and specifications, design statement, and perspective or elevation of their design in three hours. Designs had to meet the needs of the clients, who requested a contemporary kitchen with seating for four and space for seven people to observe in-home cooking classes. Students were required to adhere to the NKBA Planning Guidelines and to NKBA Graphic and Presentation Standards. The student winners, who will be presented with their awards during KBIS, are:

First Place ($5,000 scholarship): Kelsey Warren, Alexandria Technical & Community College, Alexandria, Minn.
Second Place ($4,000 scholarship): Katelyn Shipe, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg, Va.
Third Place ($3,000 scholarship): Ryan Young, East Carolina University, Greenville, N.C.
Fourth Place ($2,500 scholarship): Courtney Simper, Brigham Young University – Idaho, Rexburg, Idaho.
Fifth Place ($2,000 scholarship): Jennifer McKell, Brigham Young University – Idaho, Rexburg, Idaho.
Honorable Mentions ($1,000 scholarships):
