Despite failing to meet their $50,000 fund raising goal, Danish architects and Bjarke Ingels Group partners Bjarke Ingels and Jakob Lange have successfully erected an enormous reflective orb in Nevada's Black Rock Desert for Burning Man, an annual experimental festival for artists, performers, and those seeking "radical self expression."
Measuring 100 feet in diameter, the orb is designed to be a one-500,000th scale of the Earth and is perched on a 105-foot-tall inclined steel metal frame.
"The ORB is a mirror for earth lovers—reflecting the passing daytime, evolving life, [and] other art works beneath it—a new planet to sci-fi fans, a wayfinder for travelers, or just a huge disco ball to those who love a good party!" the duo wrote on their Indigogo fundraising page.
According to the project description, it took approximately 1,500 hours to sew 21,500 square feet of the reflective material, which was inflated on-site.
