At first, ARCHITECT editors were worried that the selection of projects were not intriguing enough for you, our stylish and discerning readers. Most of our first round matches resulted in an upset, with nearly 70–30 percent margin in voting. But then we breathed a sigh of relief this past round. This time around, you were more predictable in your decisions. The outcomes were a little closer together too, although none of them were nearly as breath-taking as the previous round's buzzer beater between Linear Cabin and Hog Pen Creek Residence.

The winner of that disputed match, Hog Pen Creek Residence, didn’t have what it took for this round. Coming off a shut out in Round One, Case Inlet snagged the win from Lake|Flato’s project. Now, Case Inlet, a small retreat designed by MW|Works Architecture+Design along the Pacific coast of Washington, will go up against the the dynamic and regionally sensitive U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters by Perkins+Will and ADG Architecture—which beat out a residential project by Shigeru Ban, Hon. FAIA. It might seem easy to assume that Goliath will crush the smaller David, but we’ve seen upsets before. The U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters is a whopping 1.2 million square feet that seamlessly blends into the Washington, D.C., landscape alongside the Potomac River. But, as we've seen time and again, people love beautiful houses.

In fact, the only matchup in the first round of this year's competition to feature two commercial buildings was between Columbia University’s Roy and Diana Vagelos Education Center, by Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Gensler, and the Shanghai Natural History Museum, also by Perkins+Will. Ralph Johnson, FAIA's epic, spiraling cultural institution for the Chinese financial capital won over readers by a margin of nearly 20 percent in that one.

Now it’s time for vote for your Final Four. Who amongst the crème de la crème will make it? As always, you’ll be the judge.

Voting for this round will close on Monday, March 27, at midnight EST.
