Steven Holl Chairs and Cabinet Up for Auction

Pieces of unique furniture will be up for bids at Wright auction house in Chicago on Sept. 27, which document the evolution of architect Steven Holl, FAIA, as an architect, as well as changes in the industry as a whole. The A-Chairs represent Holl’s first foray into furniture making, in 1980, and are made out of maple wood. The four chairs were commissioned in 2008 to be designed after the originals, and are a study in right angles, with a square seat atop three legs that fits triangularly into a corner of a room. The second lot up for auction represents today’s widespread use of CNC machines in architecture: five cubes, drilled with perforations, make up the storage unit Riddle Cabinet. The piece, which is reminiscent of Holl’s Sliced Porosity Block in China, was designed for furniture maker Horm Srl, and is from the first year of its production, 2006. The A-Chairs are estimated at $3,000 to $5,000; the Riddle Cabinet at $10,000 to $15,000. • wright20.com
