Studio Gang

The California College of the Arts currently spans two campuses across the San Francisco Bay: one in San Francisco, and another in nearby Oakland. A new building project aims to consolidate the college into one campus in San Francisco, and in 2016, the school tasked Chicago and New York firm Studio Gang Architects with the project. Earlier this week, Studio Gang released a concept design for the new campus.

The project is part expansion, part renovation. Studio Gang's concept involves a 90,000-square-foot addition and another 65,000-square-foot outdoor area. "Conceived as a creative ecosystem that strengthens relationships between people, ideas, and practices, the design extends the main academic building of the existing San Francisco campus into a new campus yard framed by a layered 'double ground' of art-making facilities and landscapes," the firm notes in a project description. A timeline posted to the school's website estimates opening in time for the 2021-22 school year.
