1999 AIA GOLD MEDAL: Working in Los Angeles, but originally from Canada, deconstructivist architect Frank Gehry has been dubbed the "most important architect of our age" by Vanity Fair. As a young designer, he first gained (mostly negative) attention with his private residence in Santa Monica, Calif., which wrapped extensions made of plywood, metal, and chain link fences around a 1920s bungalow.
