The Hanley Foundation and Hanley Wood has announced the two recipients of the 2017 Hanley Awards, the largest and most prestigious annual awards for sustainability in the built environment.
William McDonough, FAIA, founding principal of William McDonough + Partners and co-creator of the renowned Cradle to Cradle framework for design, has been selected as the eighth recipient of the Hanley Award for Vision and Leadership in Sustainability. LINC Housing, headquartered in Long Beach, Calif., will receive the fourth annual Hanley Award for Community Service in Sustainability.
Now celebrating its eighth year, The Hanley Awards are sponsored by The Hanley Foundation and supported by Hanley Wood’s BUILDER and ARCHITECT publications and EcoBuilding Pulse. McDonough will receive a $50,000 prize and LINC Housing a $25,000 grant.
“Bill McDonough has not only created the language we use when we talk about sustainability, he is single handedly responsible for setting the modern green building movement in motion – from designing the first “green office” for the Environmental Defense Fund, serving as the Dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Virginia, establishing the Cradle to Cradle Certified Products Program, and most recently, helping the World Economic Forum make sustainability a primary focus for their agenda,” says Michael J. Hanley, president of the Hanley Foundation. “Bill is a towering figure in the world of sustainable building practices and we are delighted to present to him this year’s Hanley Award.”
LINC Housing is one of California’s most productive nonprofit developers of affordable housing, grounded in the realization that with the escalating price of land, certain segments of the population would be left behind with no hope to own or even rent a place to live: retired teachers and service sector personnel and young working families in both California’s urban and rural economies. The organization’s properties are known for excellent design, outstanding management and life-enhancing services for its residents. Since 1984, LINC has helped create more than 7,800 homes in 76 communities throughout the state.
Hanley said he has long admired the work of LINC and its leadership’scommitment to providing sustainable yet affordable housing throughout California for people who are integral to communities – public employees, service sector employees, first responders, seniors, individualswith special needs, and the unemployed due to circumstances beyond their control.
“If we cannot provide well located, affordable and sustainable housing to the people who serve our communities, our communities can’t thrive and we are all negatively impacted” he says. "LINC Housing is an astounding example of an organization committed to providing vital housing and related services to those who need it most and we are pleased to honor their work with The Hanley Award for Community Service in Sustainability.”
The Hanley Award judges this year were Michael J. Hanley, President of the Hanley Foundation and creator of The Hanley Award; Frank Anton, Vice Chairman of Hanley Wood; Rick Fedrizzi, Chairman of The International WELL Building Institute; John McManus, VP and Editorial Director of Hanley Wood Media; and Katie Weeks, Director of Communications at the Institute for Market Transformation. The Hanley Awards will be presented at the Hanley Award Reception and Gala Dinner on Wednesday, December 6 during the Housing Innovation, Vision and Economics (HIVE) conference in Los Angeles.
