San Francisco architect Peter MacKenzie, AIA, died of a brain tumor on March 21. The Long Beach, Calif., native trained at the University of California at Berkeley, and was the third employee hired at the Bay Area firm David Baker + Partners—where he spent his entire career and served as partner since 2001.
MacKenzie is best known for his work on affordable housing, with more than 2,500 homes in the San Francisco region to his credit. Other notable projects include the h2hotel and Hotel Healdsburg in Healdsburg, Calif. He also participated in a number of LEED pilot programs as sustainability issues became a more prevalent factor in his practice.
More than 60 local and national design awards have been given to MacKenzie-led projects, and the firm’s recently completed Drs. Julian and Raye Richardson Apartments in San Francisco received a 2012 National AIA Housing Award. The AIA California Council will recognize David Baker + Partners as its 2012 Distinguished Practice.
Peter MacKenzie’s life will be remembered at a public memorial at Oakland, Calif.’s Chapel of the Chimes on April 21.
