Sometimes small space necessitates tight design; in other cases, it’s savvy design that puts parameters on a building’s footprint—which is to say that a micro scale doesn’t mean a project is lacking in innovation. Often, it’s bursting with new ways to manipulate space to offer the client maximum functionality while folding into the existing landscape. Such is the case with this year’s AIA Small Projects Awards. In its eighth year, the program calls out projects that work inventive design into small spaces in three categories, with living spaces taking tops for providing balance inside (see Mobile Cube) and seamless transitions to the outdoors.
