
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has initiated an extensive search for a new Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer, a move spurred by the recent departure of Lakisha Ann Woods, CAE in early 2025. This strategic decision aims to maintain the momentum of the organization’s crucial initiatives and ensure a smooth leadership transition.
The search will be spearheaded by a search committee chaired by AIA's 2024 President, Kimberly Dowdell, AIA. Dowdell emphasized the significance of the new hire, stating, “AIA’s next leader will be instrumental in advancing the organization’s mission and strategic priorities.” She outlined the goals of economic opportunity, inclusivity, climate action, and fostering innovation within the architectural profession.
Assisting in this vital recruitment process is Heidrick & Struggles, a globally recognized executive search and leadership advisory firm. The firm’s consultant, Tonya Muse, FASAE, CAE, who is well-versed in the association and social impact sectors, will lead the search from their Washington, D.C. office.
During this transitional phase, Stephen T. Ayers, FAIA, is serving as the interim EVP/CEO, ensuring that the AIA continues its advocacy and support for architects effectively. The search committee, composed of a diverse group of AIA leaders including past and current board members and representatives from various AIA committees and sectors, is dedicated to a thorough and inclusive process that reflects the diverse perspectives within the AIA community.
