The Freelon Group—the Durham, N.C.–based firm that is presently working on the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.—is joining the global firm Perkins+Will.
Phil Freelon, FAIA, signed the agreement yesterday. Freelon joins Perkins+Will as the managing director of the firm's Charlotte and Research Triangle Park offices in North Carolina. Current personnel in those locations, including RTP director of operations David Brownlee and Charlotte director of operations David Gieser, will continue in those roles.
Perkins+Will staff from the RTP office will relocate to the Freelon Group's RTP office, where they will coordinate efforts with the Charlotte office.
The Freelon Group, the architect of record on the forthcoming Smithsonian Institution museum, has designed several cultural and educational projects in North Carolina and nationwide. The 45-person firm's work includes the National Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta, the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture in Charlotte, and the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco (for which the firm served as architect of record).
