This year marks the 25th anniversary of the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s list of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places. Some names on the list probably come as no surprise, such as historic post offices. Given the U.S. Postal Service’s recent cost cutting in the face of the agency’s uncertain future, it only makes sense that something would have to give. A few places may be more unexpected though, such as Texas courthouses or Atlanta’s Sweet Auburn Historic District. (If it has “historic” in the name, shouldn’t it already be preserved?)
On the bright side, only “a handful” of the 234 sites identified on the lists over the years have been lost, according to the National Trust’s website.
