Project Description

The property, situated one block south of Buena Vista Park, offers an expansive 180 degree east view beginning due north at the Park and spanning due south to the hills of Corona Heights. The west front of the lot faces Park Hill Avenue. At the midpoint of the lot, the site severely drops in elevation, down to the rear yard property line where Roosevelt Way clips the southeast corner of the site to create a desirable openness.

The powerful verticality of the project was the first design component to present itself. The spaces of the house were arranged and organized around a four story central core that houses an interior stair and light shaft which creates a dramatic and contiguous connection to each horizontal floor.

The design of the house is rational and orderly yet maintains a welcomed casualness appropriate to the owner. There is a careful consideration of relationships and connections of horizontal and vertical space and a study in transparency and view. A rigorous level of detailed refinement succeeds in achieving a sophisticated simplicity.
