Project Description
FROM THE DESIGNER:
The basement was currently unfinished, but we worked around the existing plumbing roughs and egress window when designing the layout. The homeowners didn't need an actual bedroom in the basement, but wanted a room that they could list as such if they ever sold. We created the exercise room in that space. The barn door leading into the exercise room was to give the hallway some visual interest as you come down the stairs, as well as to leave an opening large enough that the space didn't feel closed off. Also, regular doors would have taken up valuable floor space for the swing.
In the bathroom, we chose classic materials that would stand the test of time. The wood-look tile in the bathroom gives it an element of nature to warm things up.
Timelessness was a big theme for these homeowners, as was comfort. In general, we kept the palette light and warm (no grays in this space!), mixed with the interesting texture of the shiplap and the warmth of the wood details.
Entertaining is a major function of the space. Not just entertaining in the basement, either. The homeowner throws large parties and needed extra appliances in the house somewhere. We utilized the bar area for this, and created a secondary kitchen complete with farmhouse sink, full-size refrigerator and oven. To keep the space multi-functional, we kept the island all one level and made sure there was seating on three sides. This is used for the family as a game table/puzzle table/craft table in addition to the entertaining function.
The homeowner offices out of the lower level, but the room has no natural light. We tried to keep that area really bright so that she felt comfortable being in there all day long.
