Project Description

The original 1900's home had a formal living room, formal dining room, and separate kitchen with a small family room area. Space over the garage, a half white up, house and open flex room. The design challenge was to modernize plans with an open, informal concept, and to greatly enhance the connection to the backyard for views and indoor-outdoor use, all while keeping the scale and aesthetic of the home that the owners liked. The owners wanted to convert this part-time home to a full-time resident and add two bedrooms. Additionally, the mastersuite needed to be renovated and modernized for more closet space and a gracious bath. Utilizing the existing roof lines, the house is only expanded by about 500 square feet to achieve the objectives. To accommodate the open indoor-outdoor concepts, the dining room, kitchen and family room spaces were demolished and reconfigured as one informal space. A series of new French doors lining the back wall opens to a new terrace, screen porch, and grilling porch. To accommodate the addition of two guestrooms, walls in the space over the garage were expanded to large bay windows. To accommodate the new mastersuite requirements, 5 feet was added to the back and bath was then completely reconfigured. The exterior was updated by use of new projected base elements, in new windows. Front porch and entry were redetailed to correct proportions for traditional southern architecture.
