Project Description

This 16th floor co-op has commanding views of St. Louis’ beautiful “Forest Park”. The small interior kitchen of only 161 Sq. Ft. had no natural light or views.

I totally gutted the kitchen and removed the wall separating the kitchen and dining rooms and part of the living room wall (see intermediate drawing) incorporating all into one spacious area.

By building in a custom buffet and backing it up to the lower cabinets in the kitchen I was able to create a large counter top for entertaining. This client has weekly family dinners at their home. This plan works better than having a wall separating the kitchen cabinets and a free-standing buffet on the dining room side. Those working on the kitchen side look out into the dining and living room and the views beyond. At night the lights of the city are spectacular.

All appliances are fully integrated and all cabinets go up to the ceiling to maximize space. By painting the walls and all of the cabinets white you hardly feel as though you are looking into a kitchen from the living and dining rooms. The under counter oven and microwave drawer can’t be seen from the dining room.

There is a small area at the end of the counter where the owner can sit and eat while looking out over the park and beyond to the “Gateway Arch” on the banks of the Mississippi River. A perfect way to begin her day!
