Project Description
FROM THE ARCHITECTS:
Refurbishing original spaces within a Victorian house, with an addition of a rear extension to create a large double-height social space with a dramatic, bespoke polished stainless steel chandelier.
This project explores the possibilities for creating vertical space within the constraints of a typical London terrace, with a double height volume that forms a dramatic space for cooking and entertaining.
A conservatory and the original rooms in the rear outrigger (both ground and half-landing level above) were demolished, allowing a double height space to be created in a new extended kitchen. The improved thermal performance and generous volume enabled the kitchen to be used as a space for entertaining for the first time. An innovative polished stainless chandelier was designed for the double-height area. This adds drama, allowing reflected views of the room and occupants below whilst emphasising the extended height. Polished stainless finishes are continued internally with a recessed display case and externally with cladding details.
A sculpted ceiling profile with radius plasterwork leads the eye toward the garden and enables a slim head detail above the 3.1m-tall doors. The garden is finished in polished concrete and limestone tiles, with a bespoke fence. The original reception rooms, first floor bedrooms, family bathroom and a utility cellar were also refurbished. The carefully considered design was revised over a number of iterations to meet the clients exacting requirements and further refined during a comprehensive value engineering
exercise. This process allowed the project to be completed to a high standard at a very competitive price, providing excellent value for money. To achieve a unified design, AFL provided a complete service that extended to architecture, interior, joinery, lighting and landscape design.
