Project Description
The designs low profile allows for the house to nestle into the surroundings. The minimalist interiors do not compete, but accentuates, the magnificence of the landscape. This project was built as “a part of the terrain”. Completed with grand windows in all living spaces, provides a visual connection to the forested landscape.
There is a minimal footprint on this rocky terrain, which is optimal for preservation of the landscape. Natural materials, like stone, wood, and concrete were used. The building orientation allows for passive heating and cooling while sun shading on the south façade optimizes solar gain and daylight, these features give the project highly effective cross ventilation. Radiant floor systems are controlled via a high-efficiency boiler feed by a HRV system. There was no air-conditioning system installed or required for this project because of the passive heating and cooling systems, which greatly reduce utility costs.
A minimalist insertion in the landscape, the house claims no presence for itself but instead, is a vessel through which the vast magnificence of the Georgian Bay landscape can be experienced. The house is a living vessel that exaggerates the relationship between the individual and the vast Canadian landscape by developing the intricate relationships between the three touching surfaces of home, architecture, and wilderness.
