Project Description
The Catskills Retreat is perched on a small mountain overlooking the town of Livingston Manor located in New York State’s scenic Catskill Mountains. The proposed 285,000-square foot high-end resort features 110 guest rooms, tennis and squash courts, swimming pools, a luxury spa, a bowling alley, and conference facilities. Guest accommodations, located in the central hotel and a series of single family cottages, are surrounded by a suite of outdoor trails for running, mountain biking and hiking.
Taking advantage of the site’s hilly topography, architects minimized the visual impact of the resort by nestling the building and facilities into the site’s natural slope. Native bluestone walls and sod roofs complement surrounding landscape and work to blur the distinction between the built and unbuilt environments. Likewise, the outdoors is brought indoors through the use sod roof garden decks and translucent glass block skylights that introduce natural light into interior spaces. The main hotel structure cascades down the primary slope, maximizing guests’ mountain views while minimizing the visual obtrusiveness of the structure from the surrounding viewshed.
