Project Description
FROM THE ARCHITECTS:
This commission was awarded through a design competition sponsored by The American Institute of Architects. The proposed design was premised on the desire to engage the Center with the public and to create spaces that speak of the transformational potential of architecture.
Structural slabs were removed from two levels of the existing industrial loft building to create open sight lines from the street into the full depth of the Center and to bring natural light into the galleries and lecture hall. The resulting spaces are spatially dynamic and programmatically flexible.
A geothermal heat pump system drawing groundwater from two 1260 feet deep wells drilled through the sidewalk and vault into the earth are used for the heating and cooling of the Center.
