Project Description
This sleek home is both local and global in its design, materials and influence. The MTC team made excellent use of the existing space of the home, keeping the majority of the exterior footprint the same. The entire home has new windows and exterior, with the second floor completely redesigned. This home shares the steep rooflines, rich cedar siding and rustic style popular across the Tahoe region, but its modern, clean lines, minimalist design and expansive glass set it completely apart. Sharp edges, bright white panels and dark, rich mahogany drawn from a single tree create contrast and precise transitions.
FROM THE PR FIRM:
Set on the banks of the crystal-clear Truckee River in the pine-covered Sierra Nevada mountains, just beyond the shores of Lake Tahoe near Squaw Valley, this sleek home is both local and global in its design, materials and influence. It is at once familiar and yet totally unique.
While at first glance this home shares the steep rooflines, rich cedar siding and rugged, rustic style popular across the region – its modern, clean lines, minimalist design and expansive glass set it completely apart.
“The design allows the building to sit there, within its environment and within its neighborhood in a way that fits,” said Marcio Decker, principal designer with Aspen Leaf Interiors. “But when you zoom in you start noticing some of the details – the windows, the mitered corners and the shadow lines. It’s a whole editing of a typical Tahoe house.”
The interior defies expectations as well, eschewing traditional lodge styling for modern minimalism with a hint of Asian influence.
Large sliding glass doors and interior flooring carried outside make a seamless transition between interior and exterior spaces, taking full advantage of the surrounding natural splendor.
“There’s almost no need for paintings because the scenery is the artwork of the house,” Decker said.
Clean, straight lines, bright white panels and dark, rich mahogany all drawn from a single tree create contrast and precise transitions. A custom German kitchen by Poggen Pohl features +Motion single touch electric drawers, Gaggenaue appliances and Dornbracht fixtures.
Custom cabinetry draws the eye upward to the tall, airy spaces that set this home apart, and a sauna completely built from aspen wood features aroma therapy and chroma therapy.
“This project was a great opportunity to design for a client that has more of an international view of interior design,” Decker said. “They really knew what they wanted.”
The home itself is in balance with its surrounding natural landscape, boasting a 15-ton geothermal system to heat and cool the 5,400 square foot house, lap pool and spa, and surrounding ice melt system. A solar photovoltaic system provides 7.84 kilowatt renewable power to supplement the grid. The sophisticated mechanical system is capable of running the property up to thirty days off-grid by way of 85 kilowatt propane powered generator. The home is also prepped for future whole-house batteries and a Tesla supercharger in the garage.
Recline on the pool deck overlooking the rejuvenating Truckee River through three-quarter inch thick tempered frameless glass railings, or open the glass wall of the massage room and relax on the fully automatic massage table. This wellness retreat also includes a dry sauna made of non-toxic aspen wood adjoining a limestone-clad steam room. A natural creek flows under the dining room reverberating relaxation, wellness and beauty.
“Mark Tanner was a wonderful team to work with – they are very customer oriented,” Decker said. “Their understanding of the design resulted in a beautifully crafted, well-executed renovation.”
This innovative and ambitious river side remodel is the culmination of energies by Mark Tanner Construction Inc., Sandbox Studio, Linchpin Structural Engineering and Aspen Leaf Interiors.
