Project Description

This investigation starts with designing speculative follies based on intertwining an accumulation of both the components and counterparts of a (themed) device with architectural elements from various eras in order to question its role on the means of cultural production. These didactic objects may register or locate certain details to explore its vividness in respect to awareness. By purposing the purposeless, a range of communicative potentials and a sense of working on other ideas is foregrounded. The theme of each folly centers around the quintessence of a formerly exclusive object that became accessible and modified due to mass and cultural production. Despite the inevitable changes, their concepts and functions stood the test of time. These follies act as beginning armatures for what will eventually become performative characters with an accumulated story lines through analytical means, referential thinking and its evolution. It’s as if these (timeless) devices are a mediator between opposing timelines, both of which play an influential role through their own interpretations. This site of investigation operates in the Parc De La Villette through the lens of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture competition submission. This interplay touches on both real and theoretical realms, from historical influences of Tschumi’s interest in follies to a manifestation beyond designing for theoretical means. This oscillation indeterminacy will be observed through the interactions of the follies as well as its visitors. This is not only to design just for the sake of moving forward but instead to also embrace (past) qualities across a wide spectrum to move onward. Due to frequent interaction, there will be a need for maintenance which leads to having this operation to be divided into three main lifespans: Life 1 – What is intended Life 1.5 – An Evolutionary Process Life 2 – New Life. This would eventually open a(n) (endless) cycle similar to the Ise Grand Shrine in hopes to (constantly and always) inspire those that enjoy it.
