Project Description
The project site in Phoenix is located at the end of a cul-de-sac adjacent to a commercial office development, with a view of Camelback mountain from the public street side of the home. The challenge was how to maximize the site's potential while minimizing the impact the adjacent commercial development.
The plan is organized around a center core of living space flanked by rectangular blocks of programs set in a modified H shaped configuration. The garage and utilitary areas form one leg, shielding the home from the adjacent commercial property while a master suite and office form the opposite leg. The living space occupies the center orientated towards the mountain view and is positioned to form outdoor living courtyards at the front and rear of the home. The entry courtyard is a typological characteristic of the neighborhood promoting community while the rear is for entertaining.
A low sandblasted concrete block site wall greets at the street and guides to the entry marked by a tower clad in natural wood ship lap siding. The center core is enclosed with aluminum clad window & door systems, the floor surface ground exposed concrete and bathed in natural daylight. The expansive areas of sliding doors, corner windows, large cantilevered overhangs, mix of materials and low landscape site walls invite & extend the perception of space.
