Project Description
The major design objective was to site the house to take best advantage of the view corridors, from views of the city lights to the desert, to the mountains. Another objective was to use natural materials from the region: native stone, copper and Douglas fir.
The home incorporates an open floor plan with warm, textural materials, clear span windows, bi-folding doors, and deep covered decks opening to the Sonoran desert vistas, all in a hybrid desert Craftsman style.
The design features Douglas fir heavy timber trusses that span from the great room into the dining room and kitchen, supported by timber feature walls. The ridge beam of the central great room was aligned to frame spectacular views of the desert mountain ridge, connecting the indoor and outdoor living spaces. The structure extends out to create a northern courtyard for the bedrooms and master suite, which center around a fire pit courtyard that opens to the mountain range. The wood walls throughout were chinked and finished much int he same fashion asa log home serving as both structure and aesthetic elements with unique wood detailing. The grand scale of the main room was grounded with local natural stone and aged steel accents.
