Project Description
Art’s influence on interior design can be seen at the new mixed-use residential development Eve at the District in Miami, where global firm Stantec provided the architecture and design services for developer Mack Real Estate Group. Eve at the District was named in honor of “Eve”, the mysterious female figure created by fine artist and photographer Anna Sweet that’s displayed in the building’s lobby. The 19-story building located at 3635 N.E. 1st Avenue, connects the Miami neighborhoods of Midtown and the Design District and features 195 luxury residences, and 61,500 square feet of retail and restaurant space.
“I met Anna Sweet at the popular Spectrum Miami art show in 2014 and immediately knew that Eve was perfect for the District,” says Susan LaFleur, director of hospitality and residential interiors for Stantec’s Miami Office. “Our design team was seeking a “wow factor” that would immediately engage and intrigue the guest and set the sensual tone of the space. Eve did that so wonderfully that naming the project after her was obligatory.”
Eve was photographed in Maui and means “to live and breathe”. The leaf covering her face is a poisonous plant. The artist says she pushed the boundaries of her work with her creation of Eve. “Focusing on the figure’s face, I kept it anonymous by introducing the surrounding plant life. Nature’s beauty shines deep in this portrait of Eve, the life of Maui.”
The interiors of the public spaces have been extensively influenced by Anna Sweet and include two additional Sweet pieces. Nalu Anela, a Hawaiian surf angel is displayed in the club room and Narcissus Jelly, a deep sea jelly fish on a celestial background is suspended in the library as art panels within the book shelves.
Sweet works and lives in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Her photos, depicting submerged women, reveal the sensuality, elegance, and intimacy of women immersed in some of the world’s most exotic waters.
LOBBY
Eve, the photograph of an anonymous woman’s face obscured by a leaf, is be located behind the lobby’s reception desk, where the “14 x 20” portrait invigorates the room with its overwhelming presence. Eve was photographed in Maui and communicates the energy of that Hawaiian island and the overall power of nature.
The painting’s significance is suggested in the lobby by applying the photograph’s colors throughout. The cream walls accented by black reflect the photograph’s background; the palette of blues and greens on accessories and furnishings mirror the shade on the photograph’s leaf; and the photograph’s red lipstick is embodied on other artwork found in the lobby.
CLUB ROOM
Nalu Anela, means “Maui Blue” and is the combination of an abstract painting and a photograph of a woman below the water’s surface. Sweet used unique materials that make the photograph sparkle in the dark, appearing multidimensional on the club room’s floor-to-ceiling wall.
The room’s interior design echoes the artwork with dark blues and teals on carpeting and seating areas, imitating the colors on the photograph’s deep turquoise waters.
LIBRARY
Narcissus Jelly, the photograph featured in the library, is a departure from Sweet’s other included work. Narcissus Jelly represents a deep-sea jelly fish on a celestial background. The work is integrated in the room as built-in art panels in the library’s bookshelves.
