FROM THE AIA
Located in a historic neighborhood, the client wished to take an otherwise “non contributing structure” and create a new, fresh contemporary home, while complementing the existing neighborhood. Challenged with an idea of “continuous spaces”, a phrase introduced by the client, the design team created a language of seamless and barrier free design. In order to blend with the existing neighborhood, cues from historic homes were infused in the design. A large entry terrace and eyebrow canopy, along with french doors and a Nanawall system, create a reinterpretation of the front porch. The front wall of the home can be opened, eroding the defining line between interior and exterior, and connecting the home to the passerby. A celebrated staircase clearly occupies a place of prominence in the new grand hall that connects the entire first floor plan. The stair visually connects the spaces and draws your eye upward, so that one may enjoy the new loft overlooking the living room, while allowing light to filter through from the bedrooms, creating further interest. Entering the master bedroom, one is bathed in light. A former sunroom has been reinvented and becomes a contiguous space containing the bath, closet and master bedroom. Concealing the water closet and the washer/dryer behind a spruce wall, an open and minimal bathroom is created, becoming the new ante-room to the master suite. These elements of design blend to form spaces that are open, inviting, and elegantly simple.
