Project Description

This project included architectural planning and design, public involvement, landscape architecture, site planning, and interior design. The focus was on designing the appropriate building for this unique site, reflecting the local architectural culture of Ketchikan, and creating a welcoming space to encourage reading and community. The design used warm, natural elements, light harvesting, a “public living room” concept, flexible community spaces, and an emphasis on local arts and culture while keeping a watchful eye on the space budget and cost. The new library is warm, welcoming, and efficient for staff, with plenty of space for operational and public functionality. Since it’s opening in January 2013, the new library has seen a flood of people newly inspired to read.
