Project Description
The owners had a previously designed kitchen by Cohen & Hacker. They purchased the adjacent lot and decided to make it into a garden and wanted views from the kitchen to the newly acquired exterior space. They asked us to remodel their kitchen and breakfast room to take advantage of the exterior spaces. We decided to open up both northern and eastern views to the gardens. We used an island hood over the cooktop in front of traditionally mullioned windows to allow views to the exterior garden. We also made a glass cabinet cabinet which backed up to new exterior windows in a 1-1/2 story dormered space to take advantage of eastern views and light. By designing white painted cabinets coupled with white quartzite and marble tops, we allowed the colorful views outside to be the dominant visual elements in the kitchen. We also opened up what had been a pantry/desk/work area to become an open breakfast area. This new space is open to both kitchen and family room but defined by a lower ceiling with floor to ceiling alder built-in cabs. This remodeling project successfully borrows from the traditional detailing of the existing 1920's home while embodying the spatial ideas of 20th century architecture. The open floor plan and transparency of cabinets and windows "allow the outside in" which is exactly what the owners had in mind when theydecided to remodel.
