Project Description
Upon entrance into The Maple Lawn development, Howard County's newest traditional planned community, the Townhomes in the Westside District compliment the new mixed-use neighborhood with a distinctive urban architecture. The Maple Lawn development required two distinct product types: a rear-entry garage townhome with a narrow 22 ft./24 ft. wide but deep footprint (Dupont & Kalorama models) and a 32 ft. wide front-entry garage townhome (Woodley Park model). In both cases, the goal was to create a unique townhome where the main living areas (kitchen/family room/dining room) are on the first floor. The Dupont & Kalorama townhomes were the biggest challenge with the narrow lot width. Ultimately, it was decided to use up the entire footprint of the lot and design for a rear courtyard while keeping a breezeway connection to the garage. This created a footprint that is 87 ft. deep, but allowed the main living levels (breakfast, family, kitchen, dining and living rooms) to be at the same slab level. The rear courtyard allows for indoor-outdoor living space opportunities. The second floor encompasses a large master bedroom suite and one secondary bedroom and a laundry room. The third floor has two additional bedrooms and a large recreation room. Various innovative floor plan options are also available. The Woodley Park townhomes are unusually wide for this market. The challenge was to take advantage of the extra width to provide first floor living that would live like a large single family home. The foyer quickly leads to a two story "Rotunda" greeting space that will be great for families that entertain. The Rotunda allows spatial interconnection between the open floor plan of the first floor with the second and basement levels. The Maple Lawn Townhomes deserves the Builder’s Choice Award for its unique style and floor plan options creating an exceptional space for both living and entertaining while providing residents a space that is luxurious and comfortable.
