Project Description
FROM THE ARCHITECTS:
Since 1950, the multi-lane entrance to the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel has been the hole in the heart of Greenwich South. The creation of the World Trade Center and Battery Park City further isolated the neighborhood and produced the circumstances encountered there today. Specifically, the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel entrance thwarts development; makes the neighborhood difficult to traverse east to west; and prevents a natural connection between the World Trade Center and Battery Park City from emerging. Finally, the tunnel site stands where Battery park City, the Financial District, and Greenwich South converge. Thus it has the potential to be a unique public venue, a new emblem of Lower Manhattan in the twenty-first century.
ARO has designed an ambitious yet attainable project to deck over the tunnel entrance in order to create a new park and public market along Greenwich Street.
